Gary Bartz's Ntu Troop played an interesting brand of music, mixing together the influences of the avant-garde, hard bop, African folk songs and early fusion and funk. This album features Bartz (on alto, soprano and sopranino) with singer/keyboardist Andy Bey, bassist Stafford James and drummer Howard King; two songs have Hubert Eaves in Bey's place and add guitarist Hector Centeno. The emphasis is mostly on group originals, plus the pop tune "Betcha by Golly, Wow," and is generally atmospheric and (with its dated electronics) very much of the period, but it still sounds good.
