marcos valle / previsão do tempo

While Garra had seen all of Marcos Valle's talented parts -- songwriting, production, singing, and performing -- coalesce into the most beautiful whole ever seen in Brazilian music, Previsão do Tempo represented a slight pulling back from those lofty heights. Easygoing and relaxed where Garra had been nearly giddy with joy, the album still didn't lack for career-topping moments -- most of them due to the sunny groove produced by Valle with his backing band (soon to break away and form the boundary-pushing Azymuth). With Valle on Fender Rhodes and Jose Roberto Bertrami on Mini-Moog and ARP, the album is more electronic than electric, but with soloists as talented as these, and a lifetime of musical instincts to draw on, the results are absolutely pristine. (Only Stevie Wonder was capable of coaxing the same type of warm, fluid grooves from his coterie of synthesizers, and integrating them so flawlessly into his productions.) As could be expected, narrative songwriting takes a backseat. In its place are loose, aqueous, funk-filled jams with synth and electric bass leading the way. Garra is still the peak of Marcos Valle's '70s output, but Previsão do Tempo is its own masterpiece, one where a listener plays connect-the-dots to hear the beauty inside.

Where Indipop began and still one of the great experiments in East-West pop culture. The heart of the group was vocalist Sheila Chandra and the underrated men-in-the-shadows Steve Coe and Martin Smith on whatever instrument came to hand. Other musicians contributed color parts, including Paul James who found fame and glory with the European folk-dance ensembles Blowzabella and Scarp. Best known for their singles "Ever So Lonely" and "Shakti" Monsoon was a signpost to new space and the launch pad of its three major players. An important album, it had its flaws but it was the first in its field.

I cannot quote exactly when, but I only ever spoke with John Rocca of Freeez once, when he worked on Van sales for Tony Monson's Disc Empire Ltd., about 1979, prior I guess to starting his group.Tony had a retail record outlet down the Fulham (Worlds End) part of the Kings Road, Chelsea, and I met Rocca there briefly, and he knew who I was (proprietor - Yankee Disc Distr.), and a former employee of Disc Empire, but I would have to say he was from West Lon

wendell harrison / organic dream

Organic Dream was originally issued in 1981; the second Wendell Harrison album from his WenHa label. The set was released in a limited run, primarily as a vehicle for Harrison to document his tunes for publishing purposes, and to act as a calling card for booking agents. On this Luv N' Haight replica reissue, he confesses in the liner notes that his early records for WenHa were more like demos than carefully planned-out recordings, because he had a small budget and no distribution outlet. It sounds exactly like one; but that's not a criticism. "Ginseng Love" must be among the only post-disco-era R&B tunes to feature a clarinet and flute (both played by Harrison) in the front line. The Moog strings by Dennis Boles weight it down, however. Faring far better is "Winter," which harkens back to Harrison's years in the Tribe collective. His clarinet, bells, organic percussion, and Pam Wise's acoustic piano offer a shimmering, quiet meditation on the season. Harrison's playing is warm, original, and spiritual. "Love Juice" is exactly what it sounds like, a funky disco jam with an amped-up bassline by Wendell Lucas, and Harrison's wailing tenor over the riff, with vocals repeating "love that juice," repeatedly. It would have made a great 12". "Peace of Mind" commences as a spiritual soul ballad sung by Miche Braden before transforming itself into a smooth funk jam with excellent guitar work by Kenny Demery. "The Wok" is nearly inexplicable; it's an attempt at smooth, spacey, nocturnal funk and notable for its considerable experimentation. Harrison's clarinet floats above the meaty bassline, analog synths, electric guitars, and drums. It's a high point. Closer "A Green Meadow," with its more nuanced synth strings, icy Rhodes, amped-up bassline, and Harrison's tenor is an excellent illustration of Detroit smooth jazz. Organic Dream is imperfect in sound, production, and conception. That said, it's an interesting historical portrait of Detroit's Do-It-Yourself aesthetic during a particularly undocumented (though fertile) era (Griot Galaxy, on the avant end of the jazz spectrum, were also on the scene recording during this period). Moreover, it provides compelling, even prophetic evidence that Harrison was trying to weave together a host of different musics that were only woven seamlessly together, first with the real advent of sampling, and then in the sounds of club jazz and neo-soul.

jackie mclean & michael garvin / antiquity

This unusual project matches alto saxophonist Jackie McLean (also heard on flute, percussion, and a little bit of piano) and drummer/percussionist Michael Carvin in a set of duets. The music (all originals) is atmospheric and often haunting, making a lot of use of space. Some sections meander, but the four-part title piece (which depicts slaves crossing the Atlantic Ocean) certainly holds one's interest. This is a unique project in the discography of Jackie McLean, and is well worth a few close listens.

upsetters / blackboard jungle dub

On Blackboard Jungle Dub, Lee Perry and the Upsetters produce another fine example of their subversive brand of dub with a unique blend of murky rhythm tracks, warbling guitar effects and distant-sounding horns. Although it does not quite match the quality of the classic Upsetters album Super Ape, Blackboard nevertheless impresses with both the brevity of "strictly" drum and bass cuts such as "Dreamland Dub" and "Kasha Macka Dub," and expansive touches like the animated DJ toasting on "Cloak A Dagger (Ver. 3)." Living up to the "Upsetter" moniker, Perry wreaks his inimitable brand of mayhem during "Fever Grass Dub" with a half-baked MC intro, lion roars and air raid siren imitations; effects which blend in well with other eccentric features like the spastic trombone solo on "BlackBoard ver. 2" and reverb-heavy percussion on "Cloak a Dagger." Just standard technique for Perry really, and part of the sound which made his productions instantly recognizable amongst many '70s and '80s dub releases. Blackboard Jungle contains classic dub taken to the outer limits and is one of the highlights of the Lee Perry catalog.

plunky and oneness of juju / every way but loose

Let's start the week off with a funky African disco classic by Plunky & Oneness of Juju titled "Every Way But Loose". The original version of this track was the title track on the group's only album that both Plunky and the Oneness of Juju ever collaborated on, which was released back in 1982. Legendary deejay Larry Levan did an extended mix of the track which was release as a twelve-inch single that same year. Even though the song was released during the early eighties, the song in my opinion has a seventies funk feel to it blended together with some nice African traditional instrumentation. Overall, "Every Way But Loose" is an great track and one of the most notable pieces of work for both Plunky and the Oneness of Juju. Enjoy!

olatunji! / drums of passion

Having come to the U.S. from his native Nigeria to study medicine, percussionist Babatunde Olatunji eventually became one of the first African music stars in the States. He also soon counted jazz heavyweights like John Coltrane ("Tunji") and Dizzy Gillespie among his admirers (Gillespie had, a decade earlier, also courted many Cuban music stars via his trailblazing Latin jazz recordings). And, in spite of it being viewed by some as a symbol of African chic, Drums of Passion is still a substantial record thanks to Olatunji's complex and raw drumming. Along with a cadre of backup singers and two other percussionists, Olatunji works through eight traditional drum and chorus cuts originally used to celebrate a variety of things in Nigeria: "Akiwowo" and "Shango" are chants to a train conductor and the God of Thunder, respectively, while "Baba Jinde" is a celebration of the dance of flirtation and "Odun De! Odun De!" serves as a New Year's greeting. The choruses do sound a bit overwrought and even too slick at times (partly due to the fact that most of the singers are not African), but thankfully the drumming is never less than engaging. The many curious world music fans who are likely to check this album out should also be sure to look into even better African drumming by native groups like the Drummers of Burundi and the percussion outfits featured on various field recordings.

Mais tarde, revelou que não sabia o que queria nem como gravaria, mas teve na época todo o apoio da gravadora, a Blue Tumb Records.Donato recebeu telefonema de Eumir Deodato que, após a audição de algumas músicas em versão demo, se ofereceu para fazer os arranjos, ele foi um dos vários músicos convidados por Donato a acompanhar a orquestra de Stan Kenton. Teve a participação de músicos como: Bud Shank, Oscar Castroneves, Dom Um Romao And e Paulinho Magalhães.

unversal robot band / dance and shake your tambourine

Featuring more darting and swooping trails of synths than you can shake a stick at, Universal Robot Band's Dance and Shake Your Tambourine is nonetheless a surprisingly unmemorable album when compared to the other disco works bearing the stamp of Greg Carmichael and Patrick Adams. The album opens with the nine-minute "Flintstone Disco," a dancefloor-fitted version of The Flintstones' theme song, yabba-dabba-dos and all. "Space Disco" is similarly light in spirit and long in length, and uses high-pitched, multi-tracked vocals similar in fashion to the ones heard on Bumblebee Unlimited's "Love Bug" (another Carmichael/Adams product). "Dance and Shake Your Tambourine" and "You're My Music" are the two top cuts. The former, while not spectacular, has a sticky chorus and a pleasant boogie drift. The latter, penned in part by future Kleeer leader Woody Cunningham (actually, most of the players on this record would later become that group), is closer to smooth but funky soul than anything else and deserved to be a radio staple. This is not a bad record by any stretch of the imagination, but it looks that way when stacked against the group's 1982 single, "Barely Breaking Even" (though it did feature a drastically different lineup), and other flashes of timeless brilliance from Carmichael and Adams.

carlos garnett / black love

The five selections (which are augmented by two previously unissued alternate takes) combine together advanced jazz, electronics (particularly from guitarist Reggie Lucas who was with Miles Davis at the time), the voices of Dee Dee Bridgewater (on one of her first dates) and Ayodele Jenkins which are often heard in the ensembles, and funky pop elements. In addition to Garnett (mostly heard on tenor and soprano), trumpeter Charles Sullivan, pianist Allan Gumbs and guitarist Lucas are the main soloists while Bridgewater is well featured on the two versions of "Banks Of The Nile." The unpredictable music overall is eccentric, sometimes overcrowded, and very much of the period but it holds one's interest.

Jean Michel Jarre, son of film composer Maurice Jarre, is one of the true pioneers of electronic music. Oxygène is one of the original e-music albums. It has withstood the test of time and the evolution of digital electronica. Jarre's compositional style and his rhythmic instincts were his strong points in 1976. While his popularity has escalated exponentially over the years, he never quite achieved the quality of this amazing recording. The innocence and freshness provide most of its charm. Jarre's techniques and ability provide the rest. This epic work will appeal to fans of Tonto's Expanding HeadBand, Tangerine Dream, Synergy, Kraftwerk, and Klaus Schulze.

throbbing gristle's / greatest hits'

Genesis P. Orridge was the Frank Zappa of experimental electronic music, exploring virtually every notion and idea of performance that he could possibly muster. And his period with Throbbing Gristle resulted in some of the most dense and difficult music to ever see the light of day, a staggering thought even decades after the band's demise. Turning the idea of rock music on its head and injecting it with a lethal dose of electronica, Gristle was light years ahead of its time and suffered endless persecution from the British government because of their wild ideas. On this ironically titled collection, the band offers 11 tracks that plant the seeds for a number of genres. Synth pop is here in the primal, awkward guise of "Adrenalin," while "Hot on the Heels of Love" may be one of the very first techno songs ever. "Subhuman" would set the standard for the type of ranting industrial rock that Skinny Puppy and Ministry would actually have to water down, and "Six Six Sixties" is the sort of guitar-driven noise narrative which would later find brief popularity with the New York City art rock scene. Elsewhere, punk rises from the dead as a shambling zombie ("Blood on the Floor"); Kraftwerk is reshaped into disco death jazz ("20 Jazz Funk Greats"); "United" paves the way for Orridge's own descent into pop; and the spine-chilling "What a Day" is the closest they could ever come to having a rave-up. Beyond these tracks, everything else sounds like it was recorded on a distant planet hundreds of years ago, blending the primal sludge of early Residents with the demented sonic experiments of Faust and Can. The results range from the eerie and ugly ("Tiab Guls") to the sublimely beautiful ("AB/7A"). This beauty is the primary reason why this band was as good as they were; it was so hard to dismiss the band because these weird hooks and chunks of pop found their way into the harshest noise experiments. Standing heads and tails above the rest of their contemporaries, this is the best place to first discover Throbbing Gristle's difficult but rewarding body of work. Anyone with even a passing interest in unusual and experimental music would do themselves a big favor by checking this out.

On his only album for Chess' Cadet imprint, B-3 organist Reuben Wilson pulled the second of his now classic career change-ups. His first was on 1971's Set Us Free, his final album for Blue Note. On that date Wilson and producer George Butler brought in a female backing chorus, a large soul band, and arranger Wade Marcus for a driving set of psychedelic soul, hard funk, and rockist B-3 workouts. Wilson moved to Groove Merchant for a couple of years where he released two solid albums with producer Sonny Lester before coming to Cadet in 1975 for this ill-fated date. Chess was in dire financial straits by this time and was soon to close its doors; the album became a cutout almost immediately. It languished in the bins and in record stores and distribution warehouse basements until sample crazy beatheads and British DJs picked up on it in the late 1980s.

sun ra / sleeping beauty

This is the great late-night Sun Ra chillout album you never knew about. The band had been working in a more groove-oriented setting off and on for over a year, as evidenced by the albums Lanquidity and On Jupiter, with both featuring prominent electric bass and electric guitar. Sleeping Beauty picks up right where On Jupiter left off, with the gentle, swaying "Springtime Again" echoing the same mellow vibe of "Seductive Fantasy" from On Jupiter. A skittering intro coalesces as different instruments pick up bits of the melody, which is then fully expressed by the horn section and ensemble vocals. It's a simple two-chord vamp, with beautiful solos that seem to embody the reawakening and rebirth of springtime. "The Door of the Cosmos" starts with a gospel-like chant and handclaps, with comments from Ra's electric piano and electric guitar. A strong bassline enters, very reminiscent of "A Love Supreme, Pt. 1: Acknowledgement," but the accompanying chant celebrates the mysteries of the unknown rather than the universal truth of A Love Supreme. This track builds in intensity, but never loses its groove or becomes nearly as raucous as the Arkestra is sometimes known for. "Sleeping Beauty" is the album centerpiece, taking up all of side two. Ra's beautiful electric piano gets things rolling, and the band falls into a peaceful groove before the vocals enter, led by the wonderful June Tyson. These songs are all built on the simplest of structures, and the playing from everyone is understated and sublime. Sleeping Beauty is truly a high point in an unwieldy discography, and something of an anomaly at the same time. There's a good reason copies of this album go for several hundred dollars on the collector's market, but it really deserves a proper release so more people can hear it. Outstanding.

don cherry / blue lake

Don Cherry is one of music's great adventurers. Always ready to stretch himself, he has seemed more concerned with growing as an artist and expanding his horizons than with getting a big paycheck. This live set, Blue Lake, is a worthy introduction to his solo work. The first part of the set begins with Cherry on a Native American flute. His simple song is as moving and spare as a New Mexico mesa. Next, he and his band move into their interpretation of some Dollar Brand tunes. First, they lay the melodies out straight and give the audience a window into this neglected composer's mind. Then it's time for their ferocious, free-wheeling, Ornette Colemanesque take on the same tunes. The last brace of tunes finds Cherry mostly singing á la Sam Rivers. Like Rivers' voicings, one forgets that this is a man, and hears only another instrument. Just when the tension rises to almost unbearable levels, Cherry breaks loose with some forceful, controlled soloing. The tone is muscular, and the ideas as sure and stringent as bitter salt. Cherry's journey as a musician has been that of a consummate artist. His remarkable career deserves stricter attention from fans and critics alike. Hopefully, the reissue of this set will start the ball rolling.
